With Springtime just around the corner, many people are getting ready for the warm weather with fresh lemonade and planting flowers. However, with March being the month of one particularly fun holiday, you can use the term “green thumb” for another reason. St. Patrick’s Day is coming, and with all things green, you want to get some St Patrick’s Day food ideas that will match the decorations.
With our list of the top 5 St. Patrick’s Day food ideas, you will have a wonderful spread that will be perfect for any school party, office get-together, or St. Patrick’s Day meet-up on your itinerary. Whether you love the color green, or just feel like having some traditional Irish dishes, you will love what we picked out.
St. Paddy’s Cupcakes
For those of you with a sweet tooth, you will fall in love with these delicious cupcakes. With chocolate cake, whipped frosting, and topped with a golden coin of chocolate, these are sure to be a big hit. The frosting can be topped with green and gold sprinkles, or mixed with green food coloring for a more festive take on the original recipe.
For an office or pub party, you can choose to add some Irish whiskey or dark beer to the cake mixture to give a bit of booziness to the chocolate flavor. You can even choose to add a drizzle of whiskey to the top of the frosting to add some extra fun to the party!
Leprechaun Trail Mix
For a light snack that has a bit of everything in it, you can make a trail mix that your guests will enjoy. Instead of the traditional good ole’ raisins and peanuts, you will mix together popcorn, sprinkles, green M&Ms and the marshmallow clover hats from Lucky Charms cereal.
This will create a green trail mix that everyone will enjoy. With a good mix of sweet and salty flavors, the sweetness will not overpower the popcorn flavor. However, if you want to add some more sweetness to the mix, drizzle some warmed-up marshmallow fluff on the popcorn and let it cool. Finally, add the other goodies.
Leprechaun Deviled Eggs
Not a fan of all the sweets? Then add something healthier to the spread that still has plenty of Irish spirit. Leprechaun deviled eggs are a great option for the health-conscious guests and will offer a lighter food item for those on a diet. These eggs are made as usual, except the inside of the eggs will have avocado added to the mixture.
This will make the inside portion green in color and add some extra healthy fats to the dish. You can even add some chopped up scallions on the top of each egg for the perfect finish touch. As an added option, you can also add a tiny bit of wasabi into the egg mixture if you want your deviled eggs to have a little kick!
St. Paddy’s Hat Smores
Even adults still love eating smores, but with St. Patrick’s Day calling for green to be added to everything, these s’mores are made a little differently. Instead of the s’mores sandwich, we turned these into hats. The graham cracker is the base – or brim – of the hat, the marshmallow is the crown, and the chocolate is what holds it together.
But the green is still missing, you say? Well, for the final touch of the smore, you will take green frosting or fondant and cover the entire hat in green color. Then, add a strip of chocolate around the base of the crown and you will have a brown ribbon on it as well. Add clover sprinkles on the hat to give it some extra Irish flair!
Irish Soda Bread
If you have had enough of the green, and just want a traditional Irish dish, then soda bread will give you exactly what you are looking for. This dish is made with buttermilk for the creamiest flavor and texture and comes out a flaky loaf of bread.
To make the bread you will add 3 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1/3 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 egg, 2 cups of buttermilk, and ¼ cup of butter into a bowl and mix it up. Bake it for 65 minutes at 325 degrees for the perfect loaf every time. Make the bread a few hours before your party or event for the best taste.
