As a parent, you’ve undoubtedly heard a good deal recently about the importance of natural baby products. But you might be asking yourself, “what can really be so bad about non-organic children’s goods?” There has been mounting concern over what levels truly exist in common kid’s products, but this information was not always readily available. That’s now changing however, as recent studies have shown that thousands of name brand children’s products actually contain dangerous levels of toxic chemicals. These chemicals have been linked to startling health problems including hormone disruption, developmental issues, reproductive problems, and cancer.
It’s probably safe to say that majority of Americans are still not aware of the dangerous toxic chemicals used to manufacture many household items. Not everyone is in the dark, however, as the importance of natural baby products has recently begun to gain more attention. Concern about chemicals present in kid’s products has been steadily growing among parents, and it has resulted in some exciting state policy changes. For example, thanks to Washington State’s Children’s Safe Products Act of 2008, major children’s manufacturers are required to report the presence of toxic chemicals in their products. In our opinion, it’s a good thing they did. A recent look at these reports revealed a startling reality in regards to what’s inside your kid’s stuff…
To date, more than 5,000 products have been reported as containing a chemical on Washington State’s list of 66 Chemicals of High Concern to Children Products, including:
- Children’s clothing, footwear, toys, personal care products, car seats, baby products, and arts and craft supplies
- Manufacturers reported using phthalates in toys, clothing, bedding, and other baby products
- Measurable levels of toxic metals including mercury, cadmium, cobalt, antimony, and molybdenum were reported
- Kid’s products also contained a number of other toxins including solvents like ethylene glycol and methyl ethyl ketone
Is There Something I Can Do To Protect My Kids?
Nearly every product your child uses could be made without harsh, toxic chemicals, but not every company wants to commit to making natural baby products. Why is this? Is it because your family’s health is not truly a concern for big companies? That’s not for us to say, but the bottom line is that adding toxic chemicals allows companies to speed up and cheapen their production. When unsafe products are so prevalent in today’s market, it’s up to you to be a thoughtful consumer.
It is particularly important to keep children away from toxic chemicals, as their sensitive and developing bodies are especially susceptible to the damage they cause. There are many changes you can make to help protect your child, and one easy way is by making sure you buy natural baby products. Luckily, there are a growing number of thoughtful companies out there who have dedicated themselves to making safe, non-toxic baby products. This includes Kangovou, the leader in BPA and Toxin-Free dishware for kids. To view our full selection of products, check out our webstore by clicking here.
